Installation
To install the Crescent Theme you will need WordPress v3.5 or newer. Installing the theme can be done two ways. You can upload the theme ZIP file using the built in WordPress theme upload, or copy the files through an FTP client.
Using the WordPress Theme Upload Option
To upload via the WordPress Theme Uploader, you will need to use the crescent-theme.zip file. This file is located inside of the "Crescent - Theme and Documentation.zip" file. Note: Attempting to use the "Crescent - Theme and Documentation" zip file directly will result in a "Missing Style Sheet" error.
On some computers, particularly on Macs, when the crescent-theme.zip file is downloaded, it may automatically open. Just look for the folder titled "crescent-theme" and compress/archive/zip it back up.
- Login to your WordPress admin.
- Go to Appearance > Themes (in the left menu).
- At the top of the page, click the Add New button.
- At the top of the next page, click Upload Theme, then click Choose File button to select a file.
- Select the zipped theme file, Crescent-theme.zip, and click Install Now
- After installation you will receive a success message confirming your new install.
- Click the link Activate.
Uploading by FTP
- Login to your FTP server and navigate to your WordPress themes directory.
In many cases, this would be wp-content/themes.
- Extract the files from the zipped theme.
- Copy the folder Crescent to your themes directory.
- After the files finish uploading, login to your WordPress admin.
- Go to Appearance/Themes.
- Click on the image for Crescent.
- On the pop-up, click the Activate button.
Importing the Demo Content
To import the demo content, you will need to first install and activate the One Click Demo Import plugin. Follow the prompts at the top of your page to do so.
- At the top of your page, click the Begin Installing Plugin link.

- On the next page, click the Install link.
- On the next page, click the Return to Required Plugins Installer link.
- On the next page, click the Activate link.
- On the next page, click the Return to the Dashboard link.
- Next, go to Appearance / Import Demo Data.

- On the next page, click the Import Demo Data button.
- The importer will take several minutes to complete, just let it run.
- When the importer has finished, you will receive a message that it is done.
Finished with Installation & Importing?
Once the theme is installed you can configure it for your content. See the sections below on configuring the theme to start adding your content.

Customize
Please Note: Earlier versions of Crescent used Theme Options for making changes to your theme. In order to stay up to date with WordPress, Crescent now utilizes the Customizer instead. Any previous Theme Options settings are automatically imported into the Customizer. Additionally, if you would prefer to continue using Theme Options instead of the Customizer, it is still available by going to Appearance / Theme Options.
The Customizer allows you to see what a change to your website will look like before committing to the change. You can preview your changes, adjusting as necessary, and then only publish the changes when you are ready.
To access the Customizer, go to Appearance / Customize in the left menu.
This will bring up the Customizer. In the Customizer, you can make changes to your layout using the options in the left-hand column. Your changes will then be previewed in the right-hand column. As you continue to make changes, the preview side will continue to automatically refresh it's layout based on the changes you make. When you are satisfied with the look, you can press the Save & Publish button to publish your changes to your website.
Customize - General
Logo Upload
- By default, Crescent will display your website name at the top of your site. If you wish to use a logo image instead, go to General / Logo and click the Select Image button.
- When the image uploader pops up, you will be given two options (Upload Files or Media Library). Choose the method you wish to add your logo, choose the image, and click the Select button.
- If you wish to have a retina optimized logo, you will need to have a version of the logo with the same file name plus the addition of "@2x" to the end. For example, logo.png and logo@2x.png. The @2x version should be a size that is twice the dimensions of the regular version. For example, if the regular logo is 230px x 60px then the @2x version should be 460px x 120px. Both files should be located in the same directory of the Media Library.
Eliminate White Space Above Logo
- If you wish for your logo to sit directly beneath the navigation bar, then check this box. This will push your logo directly underneath the navigation bar, eliminating the white space between them. This is ideal to turn on if you are using a wide, banner-style image as your logo.
Favicon Upload
- A favicon is the small icon seen in the url or tab bar of most browsers. It's also referred to as a bookmark icon. Favicons should be either 16px (square) or 32px (square) and should be either a .png file or an .ico file. To add a favicon, use the Upload button.
- When the image uploader pops up, you will be given two options (Upload Files or Media Library). Choose the method you wish to add your favicon, choose the image, and click the Select button.
- The Menu Bar Icon section is an optional setting to display an image to the left of your menu bar. Upload a small image--the recommended size is 24px x 24px or 48px x 48px for retina displays.
- When the image uploader pops up, you will be given two options (Upload Files or Media Library). Choose the method you wish to add your favicon, choose the image, and click the Select button.
Enable Retina Image Script
- The Retina Image Script is an optional setting to display retina versions of your images, if they are available. To use, you will need to have a version of your images with the same file name plus the addition of @2x to the end of the file name. For example, image.jpg and image@2x.jpg. Additionally, the @2x version should be twice the size (dimensions) of the original version.
Custom CSS
- Crescent comes with the option to add custom CSS as needed to completely stylize every aspect of the site. To add new CSS rules, paste them into the textarea provided. Valid CSS standards should be followed when adding additional CSS.

- Any Google Font can be used as the body font for the site. To use a Google Font, select a font from their site, and enter the font name into the Font for body text field. Names with spaces should be entered with the space included. For example, if you wanted to use the font Titillium Web, it should be entered as Titillium Web. CSS
The main CSS file is the style.css file bundled with the theme. It is not recommended to change this file as any modifications will be lost if the theme is updated. Instead, please put new CSS rules in the Customize / General / Custom CSS field. It is possible to write new CSS rules there that will override any other CSS rules on the site. Data input there will be retained if the theme is updated to a later version.
If you wish to do further customization to the theme, such as editing theme files, it is strongly recommended to first set up a Child Theme.

Notes
SEO Titles
If you opt to import the demo data, this will also include the demo site's SEO. To change it, you can install the Yoast SEO plugin. Once installed and activated, you can go to the edit screen for the page you wish to update (most likely your Home page). Scroll down to the Yoast SEO section. Click the Edit Snippet button. From there, you can update the SEO Title and Meta Description sections. When finished, click the Update button. Repeat for as many pages as needed, but most likely, you will want to do so for both your Home page and your Blog page.
Jetpack Mobile
If you opt to activate Jetpack, it's possible that its Mobile feature will be activated automatically. As Crescent is mobile responsive by default, it's not necessary to use Jetpack Mobile. You can simply go to Jetpack / Settings and deactivate Mobile, or, if you're not using the other Jetpack features, you can go to Plugins and deactivate Jetpack altogether.
